Judge Ann Aiken
Oregon U.S. District Court
Ann Louise Aiken was born in December 1951 in Salem, Oregon. She earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Oregon, received an M.A. from Rutgers University, and returned to Oregon where she earned a Juris Doctor from the University of Oregon School of Law. She clerked at a county circuit court before entering private practice.
She was nominated for a seat on the bench at the United States District Court for the District of Oregon by President Bill Clinton. She was confirmed by the Senate and received her commission in February 1998. She served as Chief Judge from 2009 to 2016.
Aiken is the widow of James Klonoski. They had five children together.
In the News…
Oregon District Senior Judge Ann Aiken announced she would issue a preliminary injunction to block the Department of Health and Human Services from withholding federal sex education funding from states and school districts that refuse to comply with the president’s executive order, and continue to include references to gender diversity. President Trump’s administration has attempted to require “medically accurate” sex education, not “ideological concepts.”
When Judge Aiken asked how withholding the funding is not sexual discrimination, Assistant U.S. Attorney Susanne Luse responded, “Because we’re not excluding anybody from these programs. We’re just simply saying, ‘You cannot teach that boys can be girls and girls can be boys.’”
Judge Aiken likened the directive to a “separate-but-equal policy” on sex education. The 16-state coalition has claimed that President Trump’s administration violated the Administrative Procedure Act in its directives and infringed upon the Constitution’s separation of powers.
